Abstract
Researches in periodontology have seen a lot of changes in the 90's. These changes, in turn, influenced the way periodontologists and even general dentists approach the diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease. These changes are especially
evident
in major periodontal publications where the most advanced periodontal research and experiments as well as the most up-to-date informations are generally available. It may be beneficial, therefore, to observe the trends and changes in these
studies
published in the periodontal literature to understand, as students of dentistry, where we currently stand and where we should be headed in this field.
The present study investigates the current trends and changes in periodontal research and experiments by analyzing the contents of published studies in three major international journals(Journal of Periodontology, Journal of Clinical
Periodontology
and
Journal of Periodontal Research) as well as the domestic periodontal publication, Journal of Korean Assocation of Periodontology, and designating each study into a pre-formatted category either in basic science research or in clinical studies.
The
number of studies in each category was compared with others, and the results were as follows: all publications within the studied period.
2. In basic research, active studies on periodontal disease activities, especially on crevicular fluids, were evident.
3. In clinical studies, systemic factors including smoking and ADS, and concurrent use of GTR and bone grafts as well as dental implants were among the most frequently studied.
4. Studies in the 90's showed diversity in the methods and technology employed, as well as the active participation of third world nations in periodontal research.
These results may suggest that the future periodontal research in this country must incorporate balanced approach in terms of basic and clinical aspects, and the most up-todate status in research technologies and protocols.
